Data as far back as 2010 may have been stolen in the Legal Aid Agency Cyberattack. Hackers have claimed 2.1 million pieces of data have been hacked, though this figure is unverified.
The Agency, who became aware of the incident in April 2025, has admitted that stolen data may include – “contact details and addresses of applicants, their dates of birth, national ID numbers, criminal history, employment status and financial data such as contribution amounts, debts and payments”.
The number of people affected remains unknown, but the Legal Aid Agency should contact anyone affected. Our view is that there is a case to answer based on information reviewed so far about longstanding concerns regarding the IT systems in place.
Neglect and mismanagement have been cited as contributing causes, with systems reportedly considered to be outdated. In the absence of adequate investment, systems are at severe risk of being hacked.
